Invisalign braces are transparent clear braces that use clear plastic trays for teeth alignment. A dentist takes a mold of the patient’s teeth which is then used to create a digital tooth scan. This tooth scan is used to make the aligners that correct teeth positioning.
Lingual braces on the other hand use metal brackets and wires for teeth alignment. These are placed behind the teeth (by the tongue and palate) unlike traditional braces that are bonded to the front of the teeth.
Both Invisalign and lingual braces are popular because of their aesthetic advantages. You can’t usually see either of these sets of braces. However, when it comes to choosing between lingual braces and Invisalign, we have identified few benefits of Invisalign over lingual braces.
- Patients with lingual braces have some limitations regarding what they can eat, just like patients who wear other traditional braces. But with the removable Invisalign braces, you can eat anything any time.
- The aligner trays of Invisalign can be removed while brushing and flossing. This allows patients the convenience of routine oral hygiene practices as opposed to the more elaborate methods required for lingual braces.
- Patients seem to tolerate Invisalign treatment better than the lingual braces. With lingual appliances patients often complain of tongue sensitivity. As these braces are positioned on the back of the teeth they may affect speech during the treatment. Also, mouth sores/ ulcers can be triggered due to the irritation. With Invisalign patients may experience only temporary minor discomforts during the initial stages of the treatment.
- Lingual braces are not removable throughout the treatment duration. Invisalign aligners are removable and are required to be worn for a minimum of 20-22 hours per day only for an effective treatment.
