What are tooth cavities?
Tooth cavities are the most common teeth related problems that can affect people of any age. Usually, the food particles, saliva and bacteria combine to form a sticky substance known as plaque. If teeth are not cleaned properly, these plaque deposits adhere to the teeth, which can then harden into tartar and calculus. Acids produced by germs (which are present in the plaque) degrade the tooth, resulting in the formation of “holes” in the tooth known as “tooth cavities”.
Are braces recommended on decayed tooth?
If tooth decay or cavities are not treated on time, they become extensive in size, weakening the overall tooth structure. In such cases, the tooth is not able to withstand the external forces such as pressure due to biting, chewing or any dental treatment procedure.
Can You Get Braces If You Have Cavities?
In case you are planning any dental treatment including braces while having tooth cavities, your orthodontist will recommend you get your cavities treated first . Treatment may involve dental fillings, dental crowns or root canal procedures. These treatments will help to prevent further damage due to bad tooth cavities.
Therefore before getting your braces, if your teeth aren’t sufficiently strong and have cavities, you have to get them treated. This is simply because having braces on weak teeth will create more dental problems such as cracks or fractures which will ultimately lead to tooth loss.
